Isolation, Loneliness, & The Season of Solitude

It looks like we will be spending a lot of time inside this winter. For those battling loneliness, this will become an even more challenging time. Whether it be a friend, a family member, or a neighbor, we all can do something to help. Here are some ways to learn more:

  • Untethered, a Primer on Social Isolation. "This tidal wave of social isolation moves like a ghost - hard to see, easy to neglect," writes social scientist David T Hsu. With 40% of adults reporting feeling lonely on a regular basis, this is an important read.

  • Donate Your Words, a campaign Cadbury ran in 2019, raised awareness about loneliness and the power of connection. The ads cited that over 225,000 older people in the UK go a week without talking to anyone. Their testimonials are powerful.

  • Being Socially Isolated with Mental Illness is an important piece from the National Alliance on Mental Illness.

  • The Silent Child reveals one of the many ways we can feel alone. This Oscar-winning 20-minute movie will help you see isolation in a new light.
